about

The title of this album 'Carving the Block' refers to an ancient Taoist expression of the 'un-carved block'. This implies the natural state of human nature, without conditioning and habituation. The irony is that to achieve this state it's often necessary to let go of old patterns and presumptions, it's often precisely a process of cutting away.

This is very much applicable to Glazier's approach to this album, where he strives to get to something essential without too much adornment. As a result the sounds are sometimes quite raw, letting the instruments speak, letting their idiosyncrasies sound out as characters. Often there are only one or two instruments playing, often in dialogue with each other, and in this conversation there is a tension that breaths.

The two acoustic instruments mostly used were a cello and an instrument which resembles a Japanese koto which has given some of the pieces a certain oriental feel. It's no coincidence that Glazier travelled to Japan in 2023, the last track of the album being an evocation of that journey.

The process of exploration and searching remain tangible, and is not polished away. This gives some of the pieces a certain fragility with rough edges, as Glazier carves into the block of silence.
